Between Cucumbers and Tomatoes

A Tribute to the Hikers of the Peaks of the Balkans Trail

116 miles. 31,000 feet elevation gain. 3 countries. While each day along the Peaks of the Balkans Trail may offer an array of challenges, views, and weather, trekkers can count on one thing as they stumble into their guesthouses for the night… a symphony of home crafted dishes composed of seasoned meats, local cheeses, warming soups, crispy potatoes, saucy beans, bread and jam, tea & honey… and plate after plate of freshly sliced cucumbers and tomatoes.

Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, these hydrating staples are served, passed around, and shared amongst ravenous friends, new and old. Which is where this story really begins. This 10-day loop through Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro has slowly gained popularity over the past few years, attracting a global audience of individuals who want to experience the region's dramatic alpine views and unique cultural charm.

While these marketed attractions do not disappoint by any means, they arguably take a close second to the travelers you meet along the way. An unexpected surprise, surely, for those that would normally avoid trekking routes that have become overcrowded social experiences.

There is no doubt that the physical, emotional, and spiritual ups-and-downs of this stunning adventure were enriched by the multitude of genuinely profound individuals encountered en route.

It was in between the staggering peaks – and numerous plates of cucumbers and tomatoes – that one’s faith in humanity can be restored. The brief but intense interactions held between near strangers seemed to unlock a part of the soul that has spent far too long cooped up inside a society that seems to increasingly favor hustle-and-bustle, individualism, and fostering relationships with technology over one another. There was a nearly inexplicable harmony created between the quiet, self-reflective moments along the trail and the refreshingly vulnerable and fulfilling conversation sprinkled throughout.

With all that being said, this photo collection was created as a tribute to the people encountered along the way – immortalizing the specific chapter of their lives that led them to the Peaks of the Balkans and capturing the once-in-a-lifetime experience they shared.
